Millions of years of erosion have worn down the massif, which is thought to have once towered over all other African mountains. It is also one of the most impressive, with vast areas of untouched forest concealing over 400 elephants whose most famous gathering place is in the bat filled Kitum Cave to which they troop nightly to forage for salt encrusted on the cave walls. Only 500 m from the gate on the slopes of Mt. Elgon the Mt. Elgon Lodge is situated allowing a panoramic view over the land below. The lodge is an old farm house converted into a simple, charming lodge with 14 ensuite rooms. The main building is a reminder of the colonial day passed by.
